Sustainability: A Driving Force in Advanced Manufacturing Trends

Sustainability has evolved from being an optional inclusion in a business plan to being essential as part of modern-day operations, and now becoming a source of competitive advantage. Sustainability is one of the most significant industry trends in Advanced Manufacturing in recent years.

It is widely accepted that we must move with urgency to prevent a Climate Emergency by 2030. The manufacturing industry has a major role to play. It is essential for all manufacturing companies to have a Sustainability Roadmap for the next 10 years and beyond, and to not only follow that Roadmap, but to embed it in their organisation’s DNA.

A successful Sustainability Roadmap incorporates platforms for positive Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) outcomes, aligned with a traditional business strategy. It should encompass both short term (2025) and mid-term (2030) planning.

Manufacturing companies can use Advanced Manufacturing 4.0 and its digitisation enablers to move towards decarbonisation, as well as benefit from real-time measurement and reporting. Other areas of focus include packaging reduction and water monitoring. A combination of these measures will help manufacturing companies to win new customers, stronger investor interest, and ultimately, competitive advantage in the market.
